Once funding exists, the Superintendent of the West Virginia State Police
determines a target date for enlistment of a cadet class. A tentative testing
schedule is prepared by the Personnel Section and the process begins. Active
applicants are notifi ed of a specifi c test date.
The acceptance of applications and dates of testing are advertised through
newspapers as well as other forms of public media. The cut-off date for accepting
applications is always determined for scheduling purposes.
Once an application (WVSP Form 1, West Virginia State Trooper Employment
Application) is received in the Personnel Section it is reviewed for acceptance. If
an application is incomplete or indicates an applicant does not meet the basic
criteria, the application may be placed in an inactive fi le.
Applications that are properly completed are entered into a database as active
applicants. Active applicants are notifi ed by mail of their status.
Applications are retained for one (1) year after the application is fi led or after
action is taken on the application, whichever is the later.
Basic Criteria & Qualifi cations
West Virginia State law requires an applicant to be at least 21 years of age
prior to enlistment. Applicants who are 20 years of age at the onset of testing
are permitted to test provided that he/she will be 21 years of age by the
target date of enlistment.
No prior police training will be substituted for Cadet training.
Applicants must have, at minimum, a high school diploma or G. E. D.
equivalency.
Applicants must have possessed a valid driver’s license for a minimum of two
(2) years prior to the date of application.
Applicants must not have any domestic violence convictions.
Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.

The Huntington Police Department is always interested in high quality police applicants. We test approximately every 2 years, in accordance with West Virginia civil service law, and hire from that list of applicants until either we exhaust the list or it expires. We are currently hiring from a test given on November 15, 2007, and are not accepting applications at this time.
Applicants undergo written and physical agility tests, medical and psychological screening, and a thorough background investigation before being sent to the WV State Police Academy for 16 weeks of basic training. This is followed by another 8 weeks of field training here at HPD. New hires have a one year probationary period.
The Huntington Police Department only takes applications in the 6 months prior to a hiring test, and applications are available at the city clerk’s office in city hall during that time. When we are ready to start taking applications again, we advertise for 6 months prior through all local media outlets.

The Hiring Process for the Martinsburg Police Department is as follows:
Obtain an application from the office of the City Recorder, or download one.
Be between the ages of 18 and 35 years of age at the time of the application
File your application with the City Recorder’s Office
Upon notification, appear to take and achieve a passing grade on a competitive written examination
Also on the date of the written exam, you will need to achieve a passing score on a physical agility test. Certification from a physician will be required prior to the taking of the agility test. The agility test shall consist of 18 Push-ups in (1) one minute, 27 bent leg sit-ups in (1) minute, and a 1.5 mile run completed in 15 minutes and 20 seconds.
Undergo a complete medical examination testing your general physical condition
Undergo a psychiatric evaluation testing your mental stability for appointment
Submit to and cooperate with authorities in a background investigation as to your suitability for employment
Appear for appropriate oral interviews
Submit to any additional examinations as to your suitability for employment

Qualifications: Citizen of United States; Age 18 - 35 at application; High School Diploma or equivalent; Valid Driver’s License. Candidate must become a resident of the City of Wheeling or Ohio County within six months of employment. Compensation: $32,113 to start plus full benefits. Retire as early as age 50. $2,500 sign-on incentive for WV Certified Police Officers.
Successful candidates must pass written and physical ability tests, background check (including polygraph), physical and psychological exams will also be required. The eligibility list created from the testing will be used for hiring for up to the next two years. Veteran’s preference points will be awarded in accordance with §6-13-1 of WV State Code. Applicants who wish to be considered for veteran’s preference points must submit a DD-214 or other suitable military documentation with the application. The requirements to be a basic police officer are as follows:
Testing information will be announced in the local media.
Entry exams are ordered by the Police Civil Service Commission and are given every three years or as soon as everyone on a current list has been bypassed or hired. Once it has been announced that an exam will be given, the applicant must register with the City Clerk and file an application.
The first part of the exam process is a physical agility test. The requirements for the physical agility standards are on the West Virginia Division of Criminal Justice web site (http://www.wvdcjs.com/). At this time, the physical agility standards are as follows:
Complete a 1 ½ mile run in 15 minutes 20 seconds.
Do 27 sit-ups in one minute.
Do 18 pushups in one minute.
The successful candidate will then move on to take a written test. If the applicant passes the written test, their name will be placed on a list, in descending score order.
When an officer position is open, the candidates are then reviewed on backgrounds, including criminal history, driving records, etc. The candidate will then go through a medical/psychological test.
Successful candidate(s) will then be presented to the City Manager for possible appointment to a vacant position as a probationary police officer with the department.
