Pocahontas County was established in 1821 and it is located in the south central region of the state. With a population of approximately 8,719 the county has a total area of 940 square miles, and the county seat is Marlinton.
Pocahontas County is the home to the Green Bank Observatory and is part of the National Radio Quiet Zone. The county is also the site of the headwaters for eight rivers: Cherry River, Cranberry River, Elk River, Gauley River, Greenbrier River, Tygart Valley River, Williams River, and Shavers Fork of the Cheat River.
