Jefferson County was established in 1801 and it is located in the eastern panhandle region of the state. With a population of approximately 53,498 the county has a total area of 210 square miles, and the county seat is Charles Town.
The lowest point in the state of West Virginia is located on the Potomac River (just east of Harpers Ferry) in Jefferson County, where it flows out of West Virginia and into Maryland.
